After the meeting held yesterday with those affected by the closure of the heated pools, the City of Alba de Tormes sent a statement to the media to explain to the people of Alba de Tormes the reasons for the closure of the heated pools. According to the consistory for the winter season losses amounted to 106,000 euros and explains that this is not the only measure of cost reduction.

WHY CAN NOT OPEN THE POOL IN WINTER?
a) The City’s economic situation requires it. When this government team took over the mayor’s financial situation was as follows:

b) Given the cuts to come and the inevitable reduction in revenue the city of Alba de Tormes has taken the following steps:
-No political office of the City charges a penny for their work regardless of their dedication.
-have been left out of service 25% or so of night lighting points.
The expenses for
celebrations have been reduced by over 70% compared to what was spent the last seven or eight years.
He has eliminated the cost of private agency staff.
-subsidies have been reduced.
-allocations have been reduced to companies
-No swimming pools open in winter for its excessive cost.
‘They’ve raised rates of water and debris from the least expensive way possible for low income families.
-The permanent staff employed in the pools has been likened to other city departments, covering positions have been filled by temporary staff.
c) the money available to the Administration “to no one”, the theory of a minister of the previous term, is simply a fallacy. Money is obviously the taxpayer and the administration must “manage”. Any costs good or bad, any investment good or bad, reasonable or not any credit, will pay one way or another the taxpayer. For this reason the “administrator” should make necessary investments, sustainable and, if possible, productive. In the case of the heating of swimming pools called a credit of € 420,000 with two years grace period and ten of amortization will be completed pay next year and taxpayers have paid including interest, neither more nor less than € 520,000, which for a population of 5,000 residents is an amount of 100 € for a neighbor (newborn, young, old or disabled) and for each average family (marriage and two children) 400 €.
d) Under these circumstances and added that the difficulties will be presented in the next few years the City Council believes it is appropriate to raise taxes or fees to keep the pools open during the winter at the expense of all taxpayers. Therefore the decision not to open the pools in winter and during the time incidentally that this economic crisis we are facing require us to do so. But this City Council has no objection to reach agreement even with the users of the heated pools during the months from October to May inclusive, for use provided such use does not have any cost to taxpayers.

In winter, the pools were open six months and we believe that open eight months out of season the losses were from: € 125,037.80. According to data provided by the staff of the pools the number of users ( Mean daily for months) was as follows:

pools costs were not taken into account either gardening or maintenance of buildings, facilities and equipment.
Alba de Tormes ended 2011 with 564 unemployed so during year were 60 people that are unemployed compared to 2010. Of the total, 266 were men and 298 women, the percentage of females has increased the most during 2011, for a total 21.14%.
